B2

TUESDAY

JULY 23. 1968

Council discussed its obligation under recently-enacted State legislation,
specifically the addition in TITLE 2.1 of a new chapter number 1I7.211 containing
sections nl@bered 2.1-64.15 through 2.1-64.21 and relating to: highway
safety; creating the Highway Safety Division; providing for a director thereof;
specifying the powers and duties of such Division and director; establishing
a Highway Safety Commission and requiring the establishment of local Highway

Safety Commissions; and the submission of Highway Safety programs by the

counties and cities to the Governor. In accordance with the applicable terms

of this new legislation, Council agreed that Mayor Renick and Councilman

Hartford should represent the City on the Highway Safety Commission and,

further, that the Chief of Police, the Traffic & Planning Engineer, and a

person who is an instructor in the City School System's Driver Education

program should also be included in the membership of the Commission. In

addition to those specifically named, Council authorized Mayor Renick to

appoint private citizens to the Commission to achieve a membership of seven.

Council considered a letter from Mr. R. P. Gravely, Jr., under date of July

15, 1968, wherein Mr. Gravely proposed that the City and the City School

Board consider--or permit--the establishment of a museum in what has been

known as East Martinsville Elementary School, assuming that this facility

will no longer be used as a public school building. It was agreed that the

City Manager would arrange a joint meeting of City Council and the School

Board to discuss this matter, at which meeting those interested in the

museum proposal may attend and present their suggestions.

Council gave considerable study to recommended amendments to the City's

Plumbing Code and to the City's Building Code, following which study and

discussion Council placed the proposed amendments on first reading.
