Brown reviewed with

Council certain phases of the City's water system improvements program

initiated in 1958-59, with emphasis on the present need for providing steel

covers or tops for several of the City's water storage tanks and for the

ac:quisition of property (lots Nos. 20 through 23 on New York Avenue,

situated between Armory and Smith Roads) as a site for a 1,000,000-gallon

elevated water storage tank. It was indicated that these two projects should

be combined when construction bids are invited in order to take advantage of

available Federal funds for which the City might qualify. Total estimated

cost of the total program yet to be completed was given as $658,000.00,

including the foregoing two projects. Meanwhile, Council unanimously

authorized the purchase of property for the proposed elevated tank, at

$750.00 per lot for each of four lots involved, assurance already being

given by the owners of the Lucy C. Hairston tract and the Peter Anglin lots

that this price would be acceptable; however, no such assurance has been

given by the owner of the W. C. Tatum tract.

Being cognizant of the fact that within the City there are instances of two

streets having the same or similar name, Council requested the Planning

Commission to take this matter under study, including procedures by which

the duplication of street names can be corrected, and to advise Council of

its findings and recommendations thereon.

In acknowledging receipt of and in considering the recommended methods of

initial construction and construction costs, as set forth by letter dated

October 3, 1966, from the Virginia Department of Highways, in connection

with the relocation of Route 57 (Project 0057-120-103, C-501) from its
