<br />B8 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST 22, 1972 <br /> <br />Council unanimously accepted City Manager Noland's recommendation that an <br /> <br />application be filed for Federal funds, in the amount of $1,783.81, through <br /> <br />the Office of Emergency Preparedness, as reimbursement to the City for costs <br /> <br />incurred in repairing damage to City water and sewer systems caused by <br />Ita ,June 23, 1972, <br />Hurricane Agnes during the period June 21, 1972/with the following resolutions <br /> <br />being unanimously adopted toward the filing and obtaining said funds: <br /> <br />,,- <br /> <br />I. WHEREAS, on the 23rd day of June, 1972, the President declared a <br />"major disaster" in the State of Virginia under the provisions of <br />public Law 606, 9lst Congress and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Martinsville, is a public entity within said State; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, Be It Resolved, by City Council of Martinsville that <br />the Office of Emergency Preparedness be and hereby is requested to <br />provide funds for the following: <br /> <br />To replace destroyed six inch sewer line and approximately 150 feet <br />of fence at the wastewater treatment plant; repair the damaged manhole <br />and refill all ~eas where dirt washed away from the sewer lines. <br /> <br />To place sand bags around treatment units at both water plant and <br />wastewater treatment plant to avoid flood damage. Total Cost, <br />$1,783.81 (See Attached Copies of Damage Survey Reports for <br />Breakdown of Cost). <br /> <br />This body certified that, to the best of its knowledge and belief, <br />the requested funds are eligible under Public Law 606, 9lst Congress. <br /> <br />,"~ <br /> <br />II. In accordance with the prov1S1ons of paragraph 12, b (5) of the Basic <br />Plan of the Commonwealth of Virginia Natural Disaster Assistance Relief <br />Plan, which became law on May 5, 1972, the following resolution is <br />adopted: <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />that as a result of severe flooding of many areas of this City during <br />the passage of Hurricane Agnes, during June, 1972, this Board/Council <br />declares that an emergency existed in the City of Martinsville for the <br />period from about June 21st until approximately June 23rd, 1972. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mr. Thomas B. Noland, the City Director <br />of Civil Defense, is authorized and directed to take such action, and <br />to make such applications that may be necessary, to insure that maximum <br />assistance is rendered to the inhabitants of the City of Martinsville, by <br />local, state and federal agencies. <br />
