:84-

TUESDAY

AUGUST 22, 1972

needs of the area--certain proposed lines should be of larger capacity

than those required just to serve present needs, although bids have been

received ("good" for thirty days from August 10, 1972) for either of the

two approaches. Council concurred in the recommendation, if satisfactory

arrangements are worked out between the City and the property owners and

the Council authorizes the extending of said lines, that the larger

lines should be installed, looking toward serving the area on a drainage

hasis (viz., Mulberry Creek Drainage Basin), cost of which is estimated to

be some $94,000.00, of which property owners appear to be agreeable to paying

some $80,000.00. Council suggested that the Public Works Director continue

to explore this proposal with the property owners and bring this matter back

to Council in the form of a satisfactory contractual agreement. Meanwhile,

at the request of owners (Messrs. Robertson and Pritchett - see Council

Minutes of June 27, 1972) of the new tobacco warehouse nearing completion

within the area and their agreement to underwrite the cost of a 12" water

main extension for a distance of some 1,300 feet to serve this warehouse,

said extension and cost being a part of the total plan hereinabove described,

Council authorized the extending of said water main to serve said warehouse.

Through Mr. James B. Hall, Real Estate Manager, Lester Lumber Company requested

an ''M-2'' zoning of its following properties to accommodate expansion and

changing needs of petitioner, which request was referred to the Planning

Commission for its consideration and recommendation:

(8) the block between Franklin Street, Liberty Street, and Liberty
Street Extended; and

(b) that tract of land west of petitioner's Jones Creek plant, bounded
by Commonwealth Boulevard (Armory Road), Carolina & Northwestern
Railroad, and the City's west corporate limits.
