,I) q
. ,I,J."

TUESDAY

DECEMB~1.L~l9 71

Upon inquiry, Council decided to hold its forthcoming December 28th meeting

as acheduled.

In lieu of granting the usual half-day of Christmas Eve as a holiday, Council

approved Monday, December 27th, as the 1971 Christmas holiday for City

personnel.

City Attorney Cubine informed Council that the 1970 Virginia General Assembly,

by statute, has provided for the holding of councilmanic elections in Virginia

cities and to~~s on the first Tuesday in May, with those councilman duly

elected and qualified taking office the ensuing July lst, unless charters

provide otherwise and are not changed. City Attorney Cubine further informed

Council that, should it desire to revise the City's charter accordingly, a

request in the form of a resolution should be filed with the City's representatives

in the 1972 General Assembly within the immediate future if the Assembly is to

consider and/or act upon such a request during its forthcoming session. Council

took no action on this matter.

A number of citizens residing in the area of Ailcie Street, near its inter-

section with Fayette Street, with Mr. Horace E. McDaniel as spokesman, appeared

before Council and presented the following statement:

We, the undersigned residents of Fayette and Ailcie Streets,
strongly disagree with the location of a public business enterprise
at the corner of Fayette and Ailcie Streets.
We believe this business venture would encompass three major
problems. First of all, this business construction would depreciate
our private property. Secondly, it would obstruct traffic traveling
on Ailcie Street. Thirdly, it would be a safety hazard with regard
to school children crossing Ailcie or Fayette Streets in order to
go home.
