<br />2t <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />NOVEMBER 9, 1971 <br /> <br />,~ <br /> <br />By letter dated November 9, 1971, Nationwide Homes, Inc., (Mr. James w. Severt, <br /> <br />President), requested that Council authorize the extending of a water main <br /> <br />along Rives Road Extended to the intersection of Rives Road Extended and Drewry <br /> <br />Road, at or near the Norfolk & Western Railway grade crossing into Nationwide <br /> <br />Homes' property, to provide better water service for the southwestern section <br /> <br />of the City and to provide fire protection for Nationwide Homes' expanded <br /> <br />manufacturing facilities. Upon recommendation of Public Works Director George <br /> <br />W. Brown, who informed Council that this project would be in keeping with the <br /> <br />City's plans as outlined to Council at its meeting held March ll, 1969 (see <br /> <br />Minute Book No. 18, Page 394), at which the first segment of water line to <br /> <br />serve Nationwide Homes was authorized (for a distance of 1,300 feet), and who <br /> <br />informed Council that this additional segment of 674 feet of 12" water main, <br /> <br />plus necessary piping under the Norfolk & Western Railway tracks, is estimated <br /> <br />to cost $10,968.00, Council authorized the construction of said additional segment. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of, and indicated study thereof, a letter from <br /> <br />the State Department of Welfare & Institutions' Bureau of Corrections to Sheriff <br /> <br />James L. Carter, apprising the City and the Council of the inadequacy, only as to <br /> <br />size, of the City's Jail to meet the housing needs for prisoner confinement at <br /> <br />times. <br /> <br />Councilman Boaz called Council's attention to the lack of playground and <br /> <br />recreational facilities for the Chatham Heights area, noting that eight acres <br /> <br />of land can be acquired for this purpose, which land is situated to the rear <br /> <br />of the Chatham Heights Baptist Church and adjoins property known as the <br /> <br />"Poorhouse Farm". Councilman fuaz further indicated that he has conferred with <br /> <br />Public Works Director George W. Brown about this need and the possibilities <br />
