<br />, (. <br />-ll ) <br /> <br />TUESDAY AUGUST 17, 1971 <br /> <br />by The Whittle Family Irrevocable Trust. Representing petitioner was Mr. <br /> <br />James W. Haskins, Attorney at Law, who indicated that Waldron & Fralin, <br /> <br />Inc., intend purchasing this tract and constructing and operating a <br /> <br />convalescent home at an investment of approximately $l,OOO,OOO. Upon motion, <br /> <br />duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council accepted the Planning <br /> <br />Commission's recommendation (filed with Council July 13, 1971) that this <br /> <br />petition be approved and, too, Council adopted the following ordinance <br /> <br />amending the City's Zoning Code to effect said rezoning: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assembled this seventeenth day of August, 1971, <br />that the Zoning Code and the Zoning Map of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, be--and are hereby--amended to reclassify to "R-6 <br />Residential" that certain 3~-acre tract of land, owned by The Whittle <br />Family Irrevocable Trust, situated approximately 600 feet east of <br />Brookdale Road, to the rear of the Cooper & Ratcliff Store on <br />Brookdale Road. Reference is made to petition filed with Martinsville <br />City Council on May 11, 1971, by Mr. Earle W. Greene, Realtor, Agent <br />for Waldron & Fralin, Inc. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of the following Planning Commission report on <br /> <br />petition dated June 8, 1971 as filed by Mrs. Beulah W. Covington and Mrs. <br /> <br />Nannie J. Draper, requesting the closing of a portion of unopened Douglas <br /> <br />Street, and then called for a duly-advertised public hearing to be conducted <br /> <br />by Council on this petition at Council's forthcoming September 28th meeting, <br /> <br />by which time it is expected that the Board of Viewers considering this <br /> <br />request will have reported its findings: <br /> <br />The City Planning Commission conducted a duly advertised public hearing <br />on Thursday, July 15, 1971 with regard to a petition submitted to Council <br />by Mrs. Beulah W. Covington and Mrs. Nannie J. Draper requesting the <br />closing and abandonment of a portion of an unopened street known as <br />Douglas Street lying in South Martinsville between Whittle Street and <br />the Coca-Cola property. Also included in this petition was a verbal <br />request that Lots No.8, 9, 10, and 11 be rezoned from a R-6 Residential <br />classification to a C-3 Commercial classification. <br /> <br />At t this public hearing the Martinsville Coca-Cola Company registered <br />an objection to the closing of any portion of Douglas Street. <br />
