If

TUESDAY

MARCH 9, 1971

<-

There was displayed before Council a map on which was shown the layout of

four athletic fields proposed to be developed on what is now identified as

the Souths ide Park site, consisting of approximately 17 acres of land already

purchased by the City and approximately 10 acres of land under option to the

City and owned by the Martinsville Recreation Association, Inc. City Manager

Noland explained that with the approval of the Recreation Association the City

has graded and seeded the Association's land along with the City-owned land,

inasmuch as it is understood that the City would acquire title to the

Association-owned property in the future. The City Manager explained further

that up to the present time efforts have been unsuccessful toward securing

either Federal or State matching funds for development of this area; neverthe-

less, there have been sufficient City funds to purchase the property and to

bring the development to its present stage and to provide for lighting of one

field. The rate of development in the future, however, as City Manager Noland

pointed out, will depend upon the amounts of City budget allocations and upon

the remaining possibility of assistance from both other levels of government

and local civic assistance. At this point, Mr. Roger Reynolds, as representative

of the Martinsville Jaycees, addressed the Council to comment upon the long-

standing interest of the Jaycees in local recreation and their support thereof

and, furthermore, although the Jaycees had unofficially indicated its intent to

assist financially in this project, presented the City--through Mayor Renick--the

Jaycees' check and contribution (toward further development of Souths ide Park) in

the amount of $7,000.00, which presentation and contribution brought forth a round

of applause from both Council and visitors present. Council gratefully and

appreciatively accepted this donation, noting that it comes on the heel of a $600.00

donation presented at Council's February 23rd meeting by the Martinsville-Henry

County Pony League, both of which donations Council authorized and directed to

improvements to Souths ide Park.

.-

,-
