11

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 8, 1970

Pursuant to your memorandum of June 12, 1970, your three viewers met
on July 10, 1970 and viewed that portion of Middle Street between
Roundabout Road and the Rear lot #91 of the Wray Estates Developments.
We find, that the portion of Middle Street between Roundabout Road
and the front of Lot #91 can be closed without present inconvenience as
a new Street has replaced this portion. We also find, that the portion
running from Pony place to the Rear line of lot #91 cannot be closed
without present inconvenience, in view of the fact that approximately
seventy-five (75) houses are under construction on the adjoining
streets with only one exit during peak traffic periods. We believe
that this portion of the Street should not be vacated and abandoned.

W. B. Muse, Jr.
Leroy Perkins
Joseph W. Pritchett

council continued this matter, subject to a duly-advertised public hearing

scheduled for Council's forthcoming October 13th meeting, meanwhile agreeing

to visit the street and area in question prior to said public hearing.

council also received the following Planning Commission report on the

Nationwide Homes' rezoning petition (filed with Council on June 23, 1970),

which petition requested the rezoning to an Industrial classification of

petitioner's property--not already so zoned--within the vicinity of

petitioner's new plant off Rives Road Extended, between the Norfolk & Western

Railway and Forest Street Extension, meanwhile calling for a duly-advertised

public hearing on the petition at council's forthcoming October 13th meeting

and agreeing to view the property and area in question prior to said public

hearing:

The Planning Commission conducted a public hearing on August 20, 1970,
with regard to a petition submitted by Nationwide Homes requesting the
rezoning of additional area around their plant site off Rives Road,
from an R-6 Residential classification to an Industrial classification.
Considerable opposition was encountered from the residents on both
Forest Street and Childress Drive. Their primary concern being possible
increase of traffic in the area and the view created by the open storage
of the prefabricated housing units produced by Nationwide Homes.

A quorum of the Commission was not present at this meeting; consequently,
a decision in this matter was held in abeyance until the Commission's
meeting on September 1, 1970.
