<br />,74 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 14, 1974 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council authorized and <br /> <br />directed the conveyance to the Virginia Department of Highways of a strip of <br /> <br />land, consisting of approximately 1.8 acres fronting Route 706 (Smith Lake <br /> <br />Road). <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council joined in with <br /> <br />the Henry County Board of Supervisors in requesting that improvements be made <br /> <br />by the Virginia Department of Highways, as soon as possible, to Route 108 <br /> <br />(Figsboro Road) within and outside the City's corporate limits; and, also, <br /> <br />that Route 882 be upgraded to primary status with appropriate improvements. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of a certified abstract of votes cast in the <br /> <br />councilmanic election held Tuesday, May 7, 1974, in which Messrs. G. S. <br /> <br />Fitz-hugh, Jr., and Barry A. Greene were duly elected to Council for four- <br /> <br />year terms beginning September l, 1974. Votes for the six candidates for <br /> <br />the two councilmanic terms were: <br /> <br />G. S. Fitz-hugh, Jr. <br />Barry A. Greene <br />Richard A. Prillaman <br />John W. Swezey <br />Frederick W. Turner <br />Francis T. West <br /> <br />l,887 votes; <br />1,890 votes; <br />1,551 votes; <br />971 votes; <br />245 votes; and <br />l,79l votes. <br /> <br />City Manager Noland informed Council that his proposed 1974-75 City Budget <br /> <br />anticipates at this point a sizeable deficit, meanwhile pointing out limited <br /> <br />taxable sources from which some additional revenue might be obtained. In <br /> <br />connection therewith and in acceptance of the Manager's recommendation, <br /> <br />Council unanimously authorized a study toward revising the Electric System's <br /> <br />rate structure for Council's earliest consideration. <br />
