<br />2, <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAy 14, 1974 <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of Mayor West, who cited past instances in which there have <br /> <br />been a lack of a quorum of the Planning Commission at its meetings and, also, the <br /> <br />desire to broaden citizen participation in such agencies as the Planning Commission, <br /> <br />Council unanimously adopted the following ordinance amending Section 2-6 of the <br /> <br />Code of the City of Martinsville (1971), thereby increasing (from seven) to nine <br /> <br />the number of members of the Planning Commission, effective May 25, 1974: <br /> <br />/- <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Section 2-6 of the Code of the City of Martinsville, Virginia <br />(197l) provides that the City Planning Commission shall consist of <br />seven (7) members; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is the desire of Martinsville City Council that the member- <br />ship of said Planning Commission be increased from seven (7) to nine (9) <br />members; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session held May 14, 1974, that Section 2-6 of said Martinsville <br />City Code be amended by deleting from the first line of the first <br />paragraph of said Section 2-6 the word "seven" and substituting therefor <br />the word "nine"; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that this amendment shall be <br />effective on May 25, 1974. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Noland, Council authorized the preparation <br /> <br />of an ordinance--for Council's consideration--whereby the Electric Department's <br /> <br />current "Connection Fee Schedule" might be revised toward recovering and/or <br /> <br />matching current costs incurred in making and providing electric connections <br /> <br />for new customers. <br /> <br />Mr. Harold Griggs, President of the local chapter of the American Association <br /> <br />of Retired Persons, appeared before Council on behalf of local elderly citizens <br /> <br />whose source of income is generally limited ro Social Security benefits, urging <br /> <br />Council to give consideration toward reducing local utility rates and/or charges <br /> <br />for utility services provided such elderly persons. Mr. Griggs also pointed out <br /> <br />the need for a regular meeting place for the local AARP chapter.
