Hughes presented a financial activity report of said Association for both

the past year and since its being organized in 1968, reflecting donations and

contributions either directly to the City toward the cost of recreational facilities

or in the form of directly providing such facilities amounting to approximately

$100,000.00 since 1968, which funds .the Association has raised through its volunteer

efforts. The Association also presented special certificates of recognition and

appreciation for special financial assistances rendered by American Furniture Company,

The Ftrst National Bank of Martinsvi11e & Henry County, Panni1l Knitting Company,

Piedmont Trust Bank, Sale Knitting (Division of Tully Corporation), Southeast Container

Corporation, and West Window Company. Carter, Council approved execution

by City Manager Noland of a contract--subj.ect to legal approval of City Attorney Worthy--

with the City of Danvi1le and/or the Sheriff of the City of Danvi1le, whereby the Danville

City Jail will take custody of Martinsville's female prisoners and excess or "overflow"

male prisoners, if necessary, at a rate of $3.00 per prisoner day, retroactive to September

1, 1973, with the understanding that the City of Martinsville will bear the cost of any

required medical services for such prisoners and with a cancellation clause by either

party upon six months' notice. Sheriff Carter, meanwhile, informed Council that the

present City Jail is insufficient in size to accommodate (at times) all prisoners in the

Sheriff's custody and, therefore, the City should begin some planning toward enlargement

of its jail.
