82

TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 27, 1973

Councilman Hobson asked that there be investigation of the feasibility of

increasing the vertical clearance in the underpass structure which carries Fayette

Street (Route 57) under the N&W Railway near the west corporate limits of the

City. It was explained that the lack of clearance makes it necessary for many

trucks to return to Memorial Boulevard after approaching the underpass.

The Civil Defense Planner for the West Piedmont Planning District Commission

appeared before Council to distribute copies of and explain briefly an action

plan developed for the City in the form of a written suggested course of action

the City might take to better its Civil Defense and/or emergency operations

procedures. Because of the length of the document it was agreed to take it under

advisement for study and further discussion as necessary and desirable.

Council agreed to a written request made by J. P. Wade, President of Blue Ridge

Construction Company, that the City widen the north side of Olympia Street by

development of the 13.5 feet wide strip of right-of-way deeded to the City by the

Company, to increase the existing 25 foot right-of-way, with the Company to pay

the cost of installing curb and gutter on the side in question and the City

agreeing to make the necessary street improvements after installation of the curb

and gutter as well as necessary extension of a water main, all in furtherance of

the Company's plans to construct approximately six homes on this street.

After an explanation by the City Manager that the Electric Department is in need

of a new "bucket truck" and because there is an approximate delivery time of ten

months on such equipment, it was suggested that Council agree to the immediate

placing of an order for such equipment with the understanding that the Electric

Department budget for the 1973-74 fiscal year would make provision for purchase of

this equipment, estimated cost to be $23,000. Council agreed to the placing of

this order as soon as proper bids can be received.
