<br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 24, 1972 <br /> <br />Mayor West and members of Council stressed the importance of this Commission <br /> <br />and outlined its upcoming role as one which will have a vital job to perform in <br /> <br />bringing about a revitalization of the downtown area. <br /> <br />--, <br /> <br />Mr. John Bowles, representing the "Jaycees" then appeared before Council and <br /> <br />presented a check for $3,000 as the "Jaycees" contribution towards the lighting <br /> <br /> <br />of the Colt Field in Southside Park, stating that this $3,000 was to supplement <br /> <br /> <br />the $14,000 presented at the last meeting. Recreation Director Hughes pointed <br /> <br /> <br />out that this latest contribution by the "Jaycees" brought that groups total to <br /> <br />$10,000 for developmental use at the new Southside facility. Mayor West and members <br /> <br />of Council thanked Mr. Bowles, as representative of the civic group, for this <br /> <br />outstanding participation in a community effort. Mr. Bowles then moved to a <br /> <br />related matter of interest and concern; namely, the plan of the "Jaycees" to assist <br /> <br />the City in the clean-up program and the effort to eliminate junk cars from the <br /> <br />City, and related ways of assisting the City. <br /> <br />There was read a petition of Mr. J. William Jones, III, 316 Brown Street, that he <br /> <br />be allowed a commercial type use of the property, either through issuance of a <br /> <br />Special Use Permit or a rezoning, possibly to C-2 classification, whereupon, on <br /> <br />motion duly seconded, the petition was referred to the City Planning Commission <br /> <br />for report and recommendation. <br /> <br />Mayor West explained he and Councilman Hobson had been official representatives of <br /> <br />City Council as members of the West Piedmont Planning District Commission, since <br /> <br />the formation of the Commission. Mr. West stated that Councilman Hobson was willing <br /> <br />to be reappointed for a new term, to coincide with his current term as a Councilman <br /> <br />but that he, Mayor West, wished to be relieved of his responsibilities on the <br />
