~ "\ ;:"
f;'~' tJ:

TUESDAY

OCTOBER 24, 1972

Planning District Commission and that Councilman Lester wished to resign from

membership on the City Planning Commission and in turn would accept appointment

as representative of Council on the West Piedmont Planning District Commission,

to replace Mr. West, for the current term of Councilman Lester. On motion duly

seconded, Council unanimously approved these appointments and/or reappointments.

Following this action, Mayor West explained that the Charter places the

responsibility on the Mayor to fill vacancies on the City Planning Commission,

whereupon he announced the appointment of Mr. George Nease, to replace Mr.

Morton W. Lester as a member of the City Planning Commission, Mr. Nease's term

to be coincident with the Planning Commission term of Mr. Lester, meaning that

Mr. Nease's term would expire on June 30, 1974.

Mr. John Richmond, Superintendent of Schools, appeared before Council to report

on the recent opening of bids calling for the construction of a Vocational Shop

on the grounds of Martinsville Senior High School, the three bids having been:

J. V. Richardson, Inc.;
Stanley Bowles Corporation; and
Frith Construction Company.

$577 .250
$610,900
$606,500

Superintendent Richmond explained that approximately 45% of the funds to construct

the shop would come from Federal and/or State sources but that the low bid plus

incidental expenses made it necessary to request that the City's appropriation be

increased a maximum of $25,000 for the School Shop project, whereupon Council

unanimously agreed to this additional sum. Mr. Richmond explained that the contract

would be executed the following day, between the School Board and J. V. Richardson,

Inc., the low bidder. It was further agreed to postpone until a later time final

determination of the amount of money it would be necessary to borrow from the

State's Literary Fund, pursuant to Council's authorization given on May 9, 1972,

at the outset of the Vocational Shop building project.

"'_._--_._"---~--"---"."-~~,-^~,~_."~"~."_.~,.._----~,...""'-~..._,._,..._,..,"-,,~_._._-,---_..._-----_._"~"-'~,..._...-"-_.._".."''',....~..',''"~._,',,..''..,..,,'';"-'"..~'-,.,~-
