<br />.) <br /> <br />.~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 10, 1972 <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Noland, Council unanimously qdopted the <br /> <br />following "Line-of-Duty" ordinance pursuant to legislation enacted by the 1972 <br /> <br />Virginia General Assembly, including the recognition of the City's Fire Department, <br /> <br />the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, and the Martinsville-Henry County <br /> <br />Rescue Squad as integral parts of the City's official safety program: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the General Assembly of the State of Virginia adopted in <br />1972 the Line of Duty Act which entitles the beneficiary of any deceased <br />member of a fire company or department or rescue squad to receive a sum <br />not to exceed $10,000.00 as a result of the death of one of the above <br />occurring as a direct result of the performance of his duty, provided <br />that said fire company or department or rescue squad shall have been <br />recognized by an ordinance of any political subdivision of this State <br />as an integral part of the official safety program of such political <br />subdivision; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsville Fire Department and Martinsville-Henry <br />County Rescue Squad are an integral part of the official safety program <br />of the City of Martinsville, Virginia; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, no ordinance has been enacted recognizing this fact; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, an emergency exists, and will continue to exist, until such <br />an ordinance is enacted; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assembled this tenth day of October, 1972, that the <br />Martinsville Fire Department and Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad <br />be, and they hereby are, recognized as an integral part of the official <br />safety program of Lhe City of Martinsville, Virginia, and be it further <br />ordained that this ordinance shall take effect as an emergency measure <br />at the time and date of its enactment on October 10, 1972 and shall <br />continue in full force and effect until further action of this Council. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged with appreciation a memorandum report filed by Councilman <br /> <br />Morton W. Lester, Chairman of the recently-appointed Central Business District <br /> <br />Study Committee and, furthermore, pursuant to the special committee's <br /> <br />recommendation, agreed to establish an Advisory CommiSsion thereon with further <br /> <br />consideration to be given thereto at Council's forthcoming October 24th meeting. <br /> <br />Mayor West, meanwhile, noted that two other special committees recently appointed <br /> <br />are actively carrying out their assignments, with Councilman Hobson's Committee <br /> <br />on Environment scheduled to report at said October 24th meeting and Vice-Mayor <br /> <br />Boaz's Traffic Committee scheduled to report soon thereafter. <br />
