Richman, President of the Martinsville-Henry County Tennis Association, <br /> <br />along with other members of the Association and including Mr. W. K. Putney as one <br /> <br />of the spokesmen, appeared before Council and cited the growing local interest in <br /> <br />tennis and, especially, the need for the construction of six additional or new tennis <br /> <br />courts to meet present demands, meanwhile expressing appreciation for past efforts <br /> <br />to meet such demands and particularly for the six courts provided in recent years <br /> <br />at Martinsville Senior High School. These representatives, along with School <br /> <br />Superintendent John Richmond, suggested that such additional courts might be con- <br /> <br />structed on one of two sites owned by the City School Board and located near the <br /> <br />Senior High School. Meanwhile, Council requested that Mr. Putney, Public Works <br /> <br />Director George W. Brown, and Recreation Director Herbert O. Hughes serve as a <br /> <br />special study committee to ascertain estimated cost of the requested additional <br /> <br />tennis courts and to return to Council with specific recommendations regarding <br /> <br />said need. <br /> <br />,..- <br /> <br />Members of the Board of Directors of the Martinsville Community Recreation <br /> <br />Association, with Mr. Raymond W. Loman as spokesman, appeared before Council and <br /> <br /> <br />presented a donation of $14,000.00 (of $17,000.00 committed) toward the cost of <br /> <br /> <br />lighting the Colt Field at Southside Park, noting that the additional $3,000.00 <br /> <br /> <br />will be presented at a later date and, also, that the Association has been <br /> <br /> <br />directly and indirectly responsible for contributing $60,800.00 toward the develop- <br /> <br /> <br />ment of said Souths ide Park. Council accepted said donation with appreciation and <br /> <br />gratitude and authorized the appropriate adjustment of the City's budget to reflect <br /> <br />same. Council also concurred in the Association's recognition and commendation of <br /> <br />Recreation Director Hughes for his continuing and outstanding performance as <br /> <br />Recreation Director for the City. <br />
