Average Daily Students Bussed Free: Mr. Hopkins estimates that the number of pupils currently riding the busses are as follows: 1053 riding free 785 using fare tickets (12~~ per trip) 20 paying cash each day (25~ per trip) 112 uncollected 1970 total riders per day It is anticipated that Free Bussing for all pupils will increase ridership. The question is, how much? According to Ronald Iler of the Henry County School System, around 85% of Henry County pupils ride the busses; however, it is doubtful that a small urban city like Martinsville would have the same high percentage of children riding busses as found in a larger, partially rural county. Mr. Bynum, Supervisor of Pupil Transportation, gave the following rule-of-thumb estimate: (1) 90% of total eligible elementary school pupils; (2) 70% of total eligible high school students. The School Board must decide what pupils are eligible for free bussing. According to Mr. Bynum, School Boards in most localities usually establish a dividing line beyond walking zones for free bussing. Normally, the walking zone is ~ mile to 1 mile from the school for elementary students, and 3/4 mile to l~ miles for high school students.
