TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 1, 1977

,-

(b) Subsequently, and during this meeting, Council
unanimously went on record as requesting "the
State Corporation Commission to exempt Southwestern
Virginia Gas Company from SCC's order issued
February 1, 1977, to the extent of allowing
Southwestern Virginia Gas Company to continue
serving its Priority 3 customers at the current
30% level of normal requirements", this being
done at the request of Mr. McClain to assure
continued manufacturing operations in the area.
(2) LP Gas Supply:
Mr. Clay M. Roach, of DeShazo Oil Company, reported
that current needs are barely being met and, that
with the expected available supply soon to be
further curtailed, prospects are not good for
meeting needs during the ensuing month.
(3) Fuel Oil (for heating):
Mr. Lynwood Craig, President of the Martinsville-
Henry County Oil Dealers Association, informed
Council that, with present inventories and without
interruption of pipe-line deliveries, supply should
be adequate for next two weeks to meet needs and
(that) it appears that (with cooperation of users)
current seasonal needs can be met, pointing out
further that the effect of industrial gas users
converting to No. 2 oil is not yet known.
(4) Public School System:
Dr. James E. Calkins, Superintendent of the City
School System, reported that all local school
buildings are equipped with oil-burning furnaces
and that he anticipates no problems for lack of
oil (fuel) during the current heating season.
Meanwhile, Dr. Calkins reported, hours for
day-time heating have been reduced; some
night-time activities have been curtailed;
students are being urged to wear warm clothing
to school; and it is not anticipated that the
required number of school days will have to be
reduced.
(5) Frozen Water Lines:
Addressing Council on this facet of the current
crisis were: George W. Brown, Assistant City
Manager-Public Works Director; Mr. Richard A.
Prillaman, President of Prillaman & Pace, Inc.;
Mr. G. G. Lawing, of Lawing Plumbing Repairs;
John Lloyd Gregory, Fire Chief; and Mr. W. B.
Muse, III, Realtor. The consensus of opinion
pointed to as many as 300-to-400 frozen water
lines, with some having been frozen two-to-three
weeks; however, a subsequent survey indicated 177
homes with frozen water lines.

,.-'"

33
