(", c:-
r:... r,_'

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 28, 1976

families (in the City) expressing a preference for free busing of local public

school students so long as local property taxes would not be increased as a

result thereof. In accepting the City Manager's report that it is not

feasible to consider the matter of free busing during the current year, Council

assured the petitioners that this matter would be considered during its

deliberations upon the City's 1977-78 budget.

Assistant City Manager-Public Works Director George W. Brown~ Chairman of

the CBD Commission, described certain efforts and possibilities toward

providing additional off-street parking in the downtown area to help meet

the needs of Henry County Courthouse personnel as well as general parking

needs in the area, such as leasing from the Southern Railway System

(Carolina & Northwestern Railway Company) that railway company's property

located on the north side of Depot Street, and the proposition of purchasing

from the Pannil1 Estate the property along Depot Street now being leased from

this estate and used as an off-street parking lot, not only to accommodate

present needs but also to accommodate the anticipated need for armed forces

reserve units one weekend per month, who will be using a portion of the

downtown U. S. Postoffice.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council appropriated the

sum of $12,025.00 for administrative expenses of the Piedmont Seniors of

Virginia~ off-set by grants-in-aid of like amount, with authority given

City Manager Noland to execute required documents and/or contracts in

connection therewith.

-
