" ,..

, f......

TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 12, 1980

Assistant City Manager-Public Works Director George W, Brown informed Council

that a preliminary engineering study should be undertaken immediately to evaluate

the City's Water Pollution Control Plant (~ewage treatment plant) facilities for

the purpose of determining whether an expansion thereof will be required to

accommodate an impending increased flow into the plant from the Henry County

Public Service Authority's greater usage of the treatment facilities, particularly

-

from the Bassett-Walker plant across Smith River from the treatment facility.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council awarded a contract,

in an amount not to exceed $8,500,00, to Wiley & Wilson, Consulting Engineers,

for the conduct of this study. Meanwhile, Mr, Brown informed Council that such an

expansion, probably up to 8,000,000 gallons capacity, might cost $1,000,000.00 for

which there may be no available Federal funds and (that) an adjustment in the City's

present sewer service tariff might become necessary.

Council was presented with a letter from the State Department of Health's Water

Programs Division (dated January 31, 1980) concerning long-range development of the

City's potable water supply and the need to reserve, as raw water supplies, such

sources as Reed Creek, Beaver Creek, Marrowbone Creek, and the Philpott reservoir,

all of which are considered as being of excellent quality, without restricting

industrial and residential development within those source areas, which are in

Henry County,

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council authorized City Attorney

Worthy to seek permission from the U. S. Justice Department to allow for the opening

of the City's Voter Registrar's office on two forthcoming Saturdays, March 15th and

March 29th, from the hours of 9:00 A.M, to 5:00 P.M.
