,-~,

h.'

TUESDAY

MARCH 13, 1979

.--.

work and accomplishments, performed principally by the some ninety volunteer citizens,

stressing the fact that, aside from other benefits, both the City and the County of Henry

are not incurring costs--which, otherwise, they would incur--for the "board-and-keep" of

youthful offenders at the Danville Detention Home because of the good influence upon, and

counseling of, many of the area's young people who, otherwise, might become youthful

offenders and wards of the courts and social service agencies. A motion by Vice-Mayor

Cole, seconded by Mayor Hobson, to include the requested $5,000.00 in the City's forthcoming

1979-80 City Budget, was replaced by Councilman Greene's substitute motion (seconded by

Councilman West), to "table" Vice-Mayor Cole's motion, which carried by a vote of three-to-

two (with Councilmen Greene, West, and Oakes in the affirmative and Vice-Mayor Cole and

Mayor Hobson voting against the substitute motion). Meanwhile, those members voting for the

"tabling" motion suggested that the FOCUS organization seek additional funding from the

United Fund, of which FOCUS became a funded participant for its first time in 1978.

Council referred to the Planning Commission, for its consideration and recommendation, a

petition requesting the closing and abandonment of unopened Marshall Street, situated in

Cabell Acres Subdivision between Lots Nos. IO and 11, off Salmon Street, said petition

having been filed by Mr. D. W. Hampton and Dr. Robert L. Mason, owners of the properties

abutting said unopened Marshall Street.

-

Upon separate requests, Council unanimously authorized the issuance of "Bingo Game"

permits to the Woodmen of the World (for its lodge location on Cabell Street) and the

Patrick Henry Lodge No. 82 of the Knights of Pythias (for its lodge location on Jones

Street) for the remainder of the calendar year 1979, subject to compliance with the

requirements of Section 18.2-335 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended).
