50

TUESDAY

APRIL 25, 1978

a duly-advertised public hearing be conducted by Council at its forthcoming May 23rd

meeting on both facets of this request, in anticipation of receiving the Planning

Commission's report and recommendation thereon by that time.

Upon request of Mr. W. Conrad Jones, Extension Agent (Community Resource Development),

Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, Council joined with the Henry County

Board of Supervisors in endorsing a "Citizens Energy Awareness" program and observing

same especially on the forthcoming July 23rd.

In response to a memorandum of inquiry from Dr. O. Lawrence Burnette, Executive Director

of the West Piedmont Planning District Commission, pertaining to the Blue Ridge Air

Transportation System Study, Council--with Vice Mayor Cole abstaining from voting and

all other members voting in the affirmative--responded that it concurs with the findings

and recommendations of said study only as they relate to the Danville site phase and to

the Blue Ridge Airport site phase.

In response to a request made by Mrs. Louise Revie, for and on behalf of FOCUS (Friends

of the Court - Understanding Through Sharing, Inc.), Council authorized a cash donation

of $250.00 (from the General Fund emergency account) to this agency to help finance the

cost of providing transportation for teen-agers (ages 14 to 18) to and from part-time

jobs the agency hopes to obtain through its recently-initiated Youth Employment Service

for the Martinsvi1le-Henry County area. Council declined the request that an automobile--

to be provided by Callaway Buick for transportation purposes--be titled to the City in

order that tax-exempt gasoline might be obtained through the City's purchases, in an

amount up to $250.00 and in lieu of a cash donation, because of the additional 1iability-

collision insurance risk and premium cost the City would incur.
