TUESDAY

JULY 13, 1982

-

of $1,995.00, which sum has been included in the City's budget, $1,345.00 of which

represents the City's 13% share of the cost of maintaining a UHF radio system for

the region's Advanced Life Support System and the remaining $650.00 for the training

of Shock-Trauma Technicians and Cardiac Technicians. It appeared to be the consensus

of Council, as expressed by Mayor Cole and Vice-Mayor Oakes, that share-funding of

this agency after 1982-83 will be contingent upon being informed of the agency's

long-range goals and spending plans and with Council's concurrence therewith, partic-

ularly well in advance of preparation of the 1983-84 City budget.

Council concurred in a proposal to close Jefferson Street at its intersection with

Mulberry Road for a trial period of two months, beginning August 1, 1982, in an effort

to eliminate some of the traffic hazards at this intersection and as a basis for

determining whether the closure should be made permanent. Council was informed that

this proposal has the endorsement of the Martinsville Transportation Safety

Commission as well as the support of citizens living in the area.

City Manager Edmonds informed Council that of the seven preliminary permit

applications filed by the Municipal Electric Power Association of Virginia for

hydro-generation rights at seven U. S. Corps of Engineers dams (see minutes of May 12,

1981), only two--and the two smallest projects, being Fishtrap and Cave Run, in

Kentucky--have been approved for MEPAV and that the preliminary permit for one of the

largest of these projects, viz., Summersville, in West Virginia, has been awarded

the City of Summersville in conjunction with a private development corporation, over

which a protest filing is being considered by MEPAV but for which MEPAV membership

support (financial and other) is lacking.
