') ~
I.... j

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 1984

Meanwhile, Mr. Cole insisted that he needs--and is entitled to--all available information

on proposed sewage treatment plant improvements and expansions before voting to "....spend

money...." and, by already getting closer to the problems involved, he has formed some

opinions thereon. Then, in posing the question (to himself) as to why he has become so

involved in the matters affecting the City of Martinsville, Mayor Cole responded, "Because

I love Martinsville", having lived in Martinsville since 1941 and being of the conviction

-

that, when the opportunity presented itself, he could make worthwhile contributions to the

betterment of the community through public service, such as being a member of City Council.

In citing his conviction and his service, Mayor Cole disclaimed any intention of so doing

".....just to be noble." Even so, and for the benefit not of

individuals but (of) the City and the community, Mayor Cole stated, ".....tonight, I (will)

raise my hand and ask Don to stay on" as City Manager. After some comments by members of

Council, in which recognition was given to the dedicated efforts and public service of both

Mayor Cole and City Manager Edmonds as well as to the transcendency of community needs and

the need to exert cooperative efforts to meet these needs, and with Councilman West sug-

gesting that the City Manager "....ought to have time to reflect before responding (tonight)

...." as to whether he will say "Yea" or "Nay", i.e., as to whether he will withdraw his

resignation, Mr. Edmonds responded by stating that, if it is the desire of Council and being

unable to refuse Mayor Cole's gracious offer of cooperation and goodwill, he will withdraw

his resignation and will remain as City Manager, although he regretted Mayor Cole's having

"....to make concessions in public...." that he "....couldn't make privately."

Council recognized Mrs. Nancy Henderson, Chairman of the Martinsville-Henry County Clean
