Z10

JANUARY 10, 1984

TUESDAY

from which agency she has recently resigned.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council approved--as recorded--

the minutes of its regular meeting held December 13, 1983, and of its special meeting

held December 19, 1983.

By report dated December 29, 1983, the City's Transportation Safety Commission (through

its Chairman, Mr. Oakley H. Fitzgerald) apprised Council of the Commission's major

activities and accomplishments, consisting of some nineteen separate items, during the

calendar year 1983. In accepting this report with appreciation on behalf of Council,

Mayor Cole noted that the Commission was first organized in 1968 with former Councilman

W. Donald Hartford as its Chairman (Mr. Hartford being present for the report presenta-

tion) and that the Commission is presently composed of nine volunteer members who are

very active and supportive of the Commission's goals.

Too, through Police Chief Terry

L. Roop, Council learned that the City has received an award for its Pedestrian Safety

Program from the American Automobile Association.

Council also acknowledged, with appreciation, receipt of the annual report (for calendar

year 1983) of the Patrick Henry Drug & Alcohol Council through its Director, Mr. James M.

Tobin, who informed the City Council that his agency has recently begun sponsoring two

new activities not included in the report, those being (1) a pre-school educational pro-

gram in cooperation with the City's Social Services Department and the City School System,

and (2) a "Half-Way House" program for alcoholics, formerly undertaken by "Hope Harbor"

(no longer in existence).

By letter and in person, Mr. Steve M. Draper, Captain, Martinsville-Henry County Rescue
