<br />?~ <br /> <br />MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1985 <br /> <br />In appreciation and recognition of the successful efforts of a special War Memorial <br /> <br />Committee in coordinating energy and resources which recently culminated in an out- <br /> <br />standing monument being erected and dedicated as a memorial to the some four hundred <br /> <br />citizens of Martinsville-Henry County who lost their lives in the service of the <br /> <br />United States during the eight wars in which it has been involved, Council unani- <br /> <br />mously adopted the following resolution: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on November 10, 1985, and coinciding with the 1985 observance <br />of Veterans Day, there was dedicated on the grounds of the Henry County <br />Courthouse, in downtown Martinsville, a unique monument as a lasting <br />memorial to the some four hundred citizens of the Martinsville-Henry <br />County area, with their names inscribed thereon, who lost their lives <br />in the service of our nation during the eight wars in which it has been <br />involved, viz., the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, <br />the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, <br />and the Vietnam War; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this tribute to fallen comrades, initiated by Pannill <br />42 of the American Legion, represents not only the combined and <br />ly cooperative efforts of the local veterans organizations but, <br />especially, the tireless work of a special committee from these <br />zations constituted as a War Memorial Committee; and <br /> <br />Post No. <br /> <br />extreme- <br /> <br />more <br />organ i- <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this special committee, whose members gave unselfishly of their <br />time and resources, brought to reality this outstanding memorial within <br />a concentrated period of some nine months through and with the support <br />of many area individuals and business firms as well as that of the gov- <br />erning bodies of the County of Henry and the City of Martinsville; now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled on Monday, November 25, 1985, that the members <br />of said War Memorial Committee be, and they are hereby, commended and <br />recognized for their successful efforts in this most worthy cause; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, in token of this Council's gratitude and <br />appreciation, copies of this resolution be forwarded to the members of <br />said special War Memorial Committee, as follows: <br /> <br />Mr. Sammy <br />Mr. James R.
