i?2
~. rw

TUESDAY, JULY 9, 1985

Plan, to become effective July 1, 1985. Councilman Oakes stated his

concern about the salaries of our police officers not being in line with

other jurisdictions, thus causing us to lose officers after we have

trained them, and he suggested that before budget time next year we should

consider doing something to upgrade their salaries.

Councilman Groden

expressed the same concerns but suggested that something be done right

away rather than waiting. Vice-Mayor Severt commended the Police Chief

and his Department and agreed with further study of their salaries. City

Manager George W. Brown noted that our beginning and ending rates for

police officers are not that much off in comparison with other jurisdic-

tions, it is our step increments that cause the difference (we have 3-1/2%

with the newly adopted plan vs. 5% for others). The Administration will

review this matter.

Mayor Cole noted that the request by Mr. Frank Gravely of Piedmont

Carloading, for a waiver of penalty resulting from failure to obtain a

business license before the May 31 deadline had been withdrawn by Mr.

Gravely.

Councilman Williams noted that he had attended a Virginia Municipal League

Transportation Policy Committee meeting, of which he is a member, last

week in Richmond and that there would be another meeting July 24 that he

would be attending if there was no objection. Mayor Cole noted that it

was our responsibility as members to attend these meetings and it was fine

with him.

Councilman Oakes noted that he would be attending the

Legislative Committee meeting on July 25 in Richmond and if anyone had

anything to present to the committee to let him know.
