J15

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 1985

-

Upon motion by Councilman Williams, seconded by Vice-Mayor Severt, and

unanimously carried,

Council authorized a donation of $10,000, as

requested by the Martinsville and Henry County War Memorial Committee

I
(represented by Messrs. Sammy Redd and Erwin Katz), for the construction

of a war memorial in front of the Henry County Courthouse, noting that the

appropriation

would

be confirmed at a public hearing of

budget

appropriations on July 23.

Upon motion by Councilman Oakes, seconded by Councilman Groden, and

unanimously carried, Council authorized the City Administration to file an

application with the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles for a Highway

Safety Grant of $16,000 to provide computer hardware-software for use in

updating traffic records in the Police Department.

Upon motion by Councilman Oakes, seconded by Vice-Mayor Severt, and

unanimously carried, Council accepted, on first reading, Ordinance No.

85-8 to amend Article II, Division 1, Section 22-24 of the City Code

relating to minimum liability insurance required for taxicabs or for-hire

vehicles in the City. Mr. Lee Smith, representing Yellow Cab Company,

noted that the present ~equirements of the City exceed the present

requirements of the State as to the amount of liability insurance required

and that a reduction in the City's requirements to parallel the State's

would mean a substantial savings to the cab owners and operators in the

Ci t Y .
