City Manager Brown noted that the City <br /> <br />agrees to conform to all State requirements and contribute its share of <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />total project cost of $4,812,932.09. <br /> <br />The City's share being <br /> <br />$384,287.17 which includes water and sewer utility C08tS. The project <br /> <br />will be implemented under the control of the Virginia Department of <br /> <br />Highways and Transportation. <br /> <br />Upon motion by Councilman Oakes, seconded by Councilman Groden, Council <br /> <br />voted to adopt the following resolution urging the members of the United <br /> <br />States Congress to ratify the endorsement made by the Secretary of <br /> <br />Transportation for the acquisition of Conrail <br /> <br />by Norfolk Southern <br /> <br />Corporation, Harry McKelvey being present to represent Norfolk & Western <br /> <br />Railway. (Vice-Mayor Severt abstained, stating that she felt the Council <br /> <br />was getting involved with a matter that affected the private sector.) <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WHEREAS the Norfolk and Western Railway Company has been in the <br />Martinsville area for over one hundred years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the Norfolk and Western <br />outstanding corporate citizen <br />both tangible and intangible, to <br /> <br />Railway Company <br />and has made many <br />Martinsville; and <br /> <br />has been an <br />contributions, <br /> <br />WHEREAS the Norfolk and Western Railway Company is now a part of <br />the Norfolk Southern Corporation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, based on merit, the Secretary of Transportation has <br />recommended that the Norfolk Southern Corporation be permitted to <br />acquire Conrail; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS it is our belief that the management of the Norfolk <br />Southern Corporation can provide excellent leadership, as well as <br />strong financial resources, to the merged railroad; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS it is our belief that the merged railroads will become a <br />stronger entity than their separate parts; and <br />
