77

TUESDAY

APRIL 16, 1985

Mr. Nolan, of the Anchor Houses, informed Council that his request of the City is

slightly less than that for 1984-85 and that his agency is now operating a Detention

Outreach Program (at a cost of $6.00 per day) which should reduce the need for detain-

ing juveniles in the W. W. Moore Juvenile Detention Home.

Mrs. Pat Conrad, of the City's Department of Social Services, informed Council that

the Department's initial request (as to the City's net cost) for 1985-86 can now be

reduced because the Commonwealth of Virginia will be underwriting more of the cost

than was first anticipated.

Mr. Earl Jones, of the Health Department, reported that regular-and-merit salaries

for Health Department personnel in 1985-86 (paid directly by the State of Virginia)

represent an increase of some 10% overall.

Dr. Max Wingett, of Patrick Henry Community College, informed Council that his agency's

request represents a drastic reduction from that of former years because there is no

present need for site development to which the four participating jurisdictions have

previously contributed; however, Dr. Wingett further reported that costs will be

increasing in other areas, such as capital outlay and curriculum information. Dr.

Wingett also reported that the sum of $3,000,000.00 is being contributed (by two pri-

vate donors) for the construction of a Fine Arts Center Building at Patrick Henry

Community College.

Mr. Wuensch, of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation,

briefly described efforts and activities of this agency, now in existence for four-

teen months, toward attracting industry and commercial development within the area

as well as indicated some expectation of generating additional revenue for the agency

from services provided and the sale of sites within the City's Industrial Park.
