~137

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1986

,-

Council was informed by U. S. Senator Paul Trible's letter of November 12, 1986,

that although the U. S. Senate approved the proposed sale of CONRAIL to Norfolk

Southern Railway, as supported by Council's resolution of May 28, 1985, the U. S.

House of Representatives did not so approve; thus, as a result, a public offering of

CONRAIL stock has been approved by Congress under the supervision of the Secretary

of Transportation.

",--

Council unanimously re-affirmed its position cited in its resolution adopted

November 25, 1985, opposing the proposed abandonment of that section of C&NW Railway

line between Leaksville Junction (in Pittsylvania County) and Hilltop Freight

Station (in Martinsville), inasmuch as the 1986 State Rail Plan Update indicates

that the abandonment or discontinuance of this section may officially take place

within three years.

In joint reports by City Manager Brown and Public Works Director Leon E. Towarnicki,

plus comments from Police Chief Terry L. Roop, Council was apprised of on-going

efforts to reduce traffic hazards and accidents (at certain intersections) along the

recently-completed Mulberry Road Extension (now named Market Street). City Manager

Brown also pointed out that the necessary "fitting" of grade and direction along

this street with intersecting or connecting streets, plus the width of the new

street, does not make for ideal design or traffic safety; however, Mr. Brown

reported that, in conjunction with on-going studies by the Virgina Department of

Highways & Transportation, efforts are being directed toward providing better

traffic safety measures and toward minimizing traffic hazards along the street.

City Manager Brown informed Council that, of bids recently received for a new ladder

truck for the City's Fire Department, the Grumman Company (of Roanoke, Virginia) has

submitted the best bid, being in the amount of $403,380.00, as well as the best
