~.

327

TUESDAY, JULY 8, 1986

~

Council unanimously adopted the following ordinance amending the City's Zoning Map and

effecting said requested rezoning:

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,
in regular meeting assembled, that the Zoning Map of the City of
Martinsville be--and is hereby--amended to the extent that Lot No.
28 located at 711 Starling Avenue is hereby rezoned from R-6 Resi-
dential to P-2 Professional.

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that, an emergency existing,
this ordinance shall be in force on and after July 9, 1986.

,-

Pursuant to statutory requirements and prior order of the Council, a public hearing

~as .scheduled for this meeting of Council for the purpose of receiving views of the

citizens of Martinsville regarding an appointment (to be made) to the Martinsville

City School Board, i.e., to fill the unexpired term (ending June 30, 1987) of Mr.

Ronald Brugge, who recently submitted his resignation as a member of the Board, effec-

tive August 1, 1986. The record notes, however, that by letter dated July 3, 1986,

Mr. Brugge withdrew his resignation, citing much work (of the Board) "...left undone..."

which he would like to help complete during the remainder of his term. Noting that

Council has not accepted Mr. Brugge's resignation, City Attorney Worthy ruled that Mr.

Brugge's withdrawal (of his letter of resignation) is valid and, accordingly, Council

need not conduct the public hearing as scheduled; thus, by consensus of Council, this

-

public hearing was declared cancelled. Meanwhile, members of Council, individually

and collectively, acknowledged with appreciation the presence of a number of citizens

who, apparently, were interested in this matter, as well as the interest by these and

other citizens by individual contacts and/or telephone calls, some of whom had ex-

pressed a willingness to serve on the School Board. In so dOing, Council urged these

citizens to continue and maintain their interest in and support of the City's public

school system.
