<br />TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1987 <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />Mr. George R. Gautsch, Attorney at Law and Chairman of the Blue Ridge Regional <br /> <br />Library Board (accompained by Mrs. Betty M. Wooldridge, Library Director), <br /> <br />appeared before Council and outlined plans for a proposed new library facility <br /> <br />in the Ridgeway area of Henry County as well as a proposed new library facility <br /> <br />in Patrick County (Stuart. Virginia), with the latter facility to be jointly <br /> <br />occupied by the Library and the Patrick County Historical Society. Land for the <br /> <br />Ridgeway facility, Mr. Gautsch reported. has been acquired. whereas land for the <br /> <br />Patrick County facility is owned by Patrick County. Mr. Gautsch also reported <br /> <br />on a new schedule of hours during which the Library headquarters will be open <br /> <br />and. too, on the recently-installed computer system which uses a bar-coding <br /> <br />system for book control and check-outs. <br /> <br />,,-... <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />City Manager Brown informed Council that, through the dedicated efforts of the <br /> <br />Martinsville Transportation Safety Commission and its advisors, Police Chief <br /> <br />Terry L. Roop and Public Works Director Leon E. Towarnicki, the City of <br /> <br />Martinsville was recently recognized for its outstanding pedestrian safety <br /> <br />programs by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and for its outstanding <br /> <br />program activites (in the area of pedestrian safety) by the Virginia unit of the <br /> <br />American Automobile Association. Both City Manager Brown and Council commended <br /> <br />the Commission and its advisors for the Commission's achievements in this field; <br /> <br />and, present at this meeting for the presentation of appropriate plaques <br /> <br />received were Commission members John Mitchell and Frank Frazier and Advisors <br /> <br />Terry Roop and Leon Towarnicki. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Brown and Housing Director Rebecca C. <br /> <br />Miller, Council unanimously authorized the filing of a request for a ninety-day <br /> <br />extension of the contract between the City and the Virginia Department of <br />
