'i "
.!. Ji.

January 10, 2006

Troy Rakes indicated that he had a pnor commitment. Council agreed to

schedule another time for his interview.

Harry Varn, President of the Martinsville Community Recreation

Association presented to Council a check in the amount of $7,346.28. This

represents the MCRA's contribution of one-half the cost of two projects

completed by Leisure Services. One was the replacement of lighting at the

Bronco Field at Southside Park and the other was installing two new basketball

goals at the Middle School that can be adjusted for different heights.

Marshall Stowe, Executive Director of MURA (Martinsville Uptown

Revitalization Association) gave a brief update of upcoming activities. Some of

the areas in which they are planning to work are events to involve more city

merchants during their regular operating hours; expanding the fa<;ades grant

program to help businesses with street appeal; the Memorial Tree program

including an Arbor Day Celebration Uptown in April; an Uptown window walk

project and expanding the season at the Farmers Market. They are also

working with the Historical Society on plans for the old Courthouse and will

continue to have the TGIF events, this year being the 12th season. Council

Member Clark asked Mr. Stowe to tell about the event they will be attending in

January and he said a group will be going to Salisbury on January 26th to

attend a one-day North Carolina Main Street Conference.

-_.....,..,.,...._,..,_..._-,.._~..__.,..._-"--"..-..--.------"..._---_...._.__.~
