Enclosure # 4 <br /> <br />Martinsville <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France in June of 1944, <br />many American soldiers fought and died as the Allied forces mounted one of the largest military <br />invasions in history, ultimately bringing to a close the war in Europe; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Company H of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division <br />participated in the invasion; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Company H was comprised of soldiers from numerous locations; however, <br />Company H was partly filled with Martinsville/Henry County men, much mom so than by <br />soldiers from anywhere else; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, of all Allied troops who hit the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944, the 29th <br />Infantry Division took the heaviest casualties; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, of all of the 29th regiments who participated, the 116th suffered the most casualties; <br />now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia in regular session <br />assembled May 25, 2004, that said Council hereby acknowledges the sacrifices made by all <br />di~ring the D-Day invasion on June 6th, 1944, in particular Company H, 116th Infantry Regiment <br />of the 29th Infantry Division, said Company composed of many soldiers from the <br />Martinsville/Henry County area; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, that Council <br />hereby authorizes the erection of two (2) signs along the section of Commonwealth Boulevard <br />directly in front of the National Guard Armory, dedicating this section of Commonwealth <br />Boulevard in recognition and honor of the Martinsville/Henry County soldiers of Company H, <br />116th Infantry Regi men t, 29th Infantry Di vi sion. <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br />Johnathan B.
