Cobbe <br /> <br /> Martinsville <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION <br />SUPPORTING ROCKINGHAM COUNTY'S <br />HIGHWAY PRIORITIES OF INCLUSION IN THE <br /> <br /> City Manager <br />Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. <br />City Attorney <br />David B. Worthy <br />Clerk of Council <br />Johnathan B. Phillips <br /> <br />TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM OF THE <br /> STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the primary concerns of City of Martinsville officials regarding transportation are <br />first, the safety of our citizens using state and federal highways, and; second, the adequacy of the <br />roads which connect local areas to each other and to the Piedmont Triad NC region to <br />accommodate existing and future demands, and; third, the opportunity to share in the economic <br />prosperity of the region and its neighbors by improving the quality of the region's major routes; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, City of Martinsville officials believe that a good highway system is vital to the <br />mutual benefit of all the citizens of the City of Martinsville and south central Virginia; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the construction of a multi-lane connector from NC 68 t° US 220 and the widening <br />of US 220 to NC 68 in Rockingham County will greatly improve northern accessibility to the <br />Federal Express hub and Piedmont Triad International Airport airport; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this route also helps to establish the 1-73 corridor, which ~vill serve the City of <br />Martinsville; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the 1-73 highway will be of significant economic benefit to the City of <br />Martinsville, Henry County and Rockingham County by opening the region to greater markets <br />for passengers and commerce; now, therefore <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session <br />assembled November 12, 2002, that it does hereby endorse and recommend to the North <br />Carolina Department of Transportation the published priorities for inclusion in the upcoming <br />Transportation Improvement Program. <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br />Johnathan B.
