351 COMMONWEALTH BOULEVARD
MARTINSVILLE, VIRGINIA 24112
(276) 632-9755

Enclosure

October 25, 2002

Mr. Earl Reynolds, Jr.
Martinsville City Manager
P.O. Box 1112
Martinsville, VA 24114

Mr. Reynolds,
I am writing to you, as the new presidem of the Martinsville Education
Association, for a couple of reasons. First, I would like to introduce myself as I have just
recently begun my two-year term as the local president of the association. I moved to
Martinsville in August 1997 to accept a position teaching biology and chemistry at
Martinsville High School, and have been a city resident all of this time. I enjoy living and
working here in Martinsville, and being an active part of the educational community.
Second, I would like to request that I be given an opportunity to speak for
approximately 5 minutes before city council at its next meeting. IfI am not mistaken, this
next meeting will be held on November 12, 2002. I would like to speak on behalf of the
MEA and the teachers of Martinsville regarding the VEA Brighter Futures campaigm
Hopefully, you and the members of city council have seen or heard advertisements and
information about this effort that is now in its second year. In these times of tight funding
and budgets, we would like to be able to get the school heard, city council, and everyone
involved in the educational system pulled together toward the common goal of getting the
state to appropriately fund programs for K-12 education. At the meeting, I will have some
information and handouts for the city council members regarding this matter. As the
Brighter Futures campaign says, "Quality programs and quality teachers require quality
funding".
If you have any questions or would like to contact me, you may call me here at
MHS (632-9755) or may e-mail me at rtolbut@znartinsville.kl2,va.us. I am not familiar
with the typical procedure since this is my first time to speak before the city council, but I
would appreciate it if you would please send me a copy of the meeting agenda in advance
of the meeting so that I may become familiar with it. Thank you for your time and
attention to this request, and I look forward to meeting you and the other members of
council.

Sincerely,

Rob Tolbut
MEA presidem
