February 13, 2001 <br /> <br /> essential element in Southside Virginia's commitment to a quality <br /> workforce and a pro-business atmosphere; and <br /> WHEREAS, VPMEP is based at the Patrick Henry Community <br /> College and has nine other offices throughout the Commonwealth <br /> and provides services for small and medium-sized manufacturers <br /> throughout the Commonwealth; and <br /> WHEREAS, Virginia's history of manufacturing, particularly in <br /> Martinsville and Henry County, has created thousands of jobs and <br /> contributed millions of dollars to the Commonwealth's economy; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, VPMEP's funding from the Commonwealth is <br /> tentatively slated to decrease from $950,000 in the current fiscal <br /> year to $600,000 in the next fiscal year, which represents a cut of <br /> more than 36 percent, and that cut could result in the loss of jobs at <br /> the VPMEP and a decrease in services available to the <br /> Commonwealth's small and medium-sized manufacturers; and <br /> WHEREAS, such a significant budge cut could do irreparable harm <br /> to the VPMEP and ultimately have a negative effect on thousands <br /> of jobs locally and throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> Virginia, in regular session assembled on February 13, 2001, that <br /> said Council does hereby express its support for the Virginia <br /> Phiipott Manufacturing Extension Partnership and urges the <br /> General Assembly to provide funding for VPMEP at its current level <br /> of $950,000, which would maintain the current level of services for <br /> all Virginians. <br /> <br /> Council considered approval of the City's prioritized list of projects to be included <br />in the Year 2001 Regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy and <br />authorizing the City Manager to provide this information to the U. S. Department of <br />Commerce Economic Development Administration. Mr. Harned stated, "This exercise is <br />completed every year." Council Member Roop moved to approve and authorize such, <br />with the addition of wording, "Patrick County," to the development of a shared revenue <br />business park section; the motion was duly seconded and carried by the following vote, <br />with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Ferrill, Roop, Teague; <br /> <br />Nays (0) - None.
