<br />L66 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 24, 1960 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />V1.rginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Courx:il Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, Tuesday, May 24, 1960, at 7:15 P.M., all members of Council being <br /> <br />present, viz., Mayor and C ounciJJna.n John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Counc ilman <br /> <br />E. E. stone; CounciJJnan Thomas J. Burch; Councilman Clarence C. Donavant; and <br /> <br />Councilman J. Frank Wilson. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held May 10, 1960. <br /> <br />In response to an appeal from representatives of the Martinsville Go-Kart Club, <br /> <br />Council agreed to the use of an area within the City's "airport" tract by the Go- <br /> <br />Kart Club , without charge but holding the City harmless of liabilities, all sub jec t <br /> <br />to an agreemmt to be prepared by City Attorney Taylor. <br /> <br />Council deferred its decision and took under consideration the following report and <br /> <br />recommendation (dated May 20, 1960) of the City Planning Commission on a recent <br /> <br />petition submitted by Mrs. Freda Worthington and Mr. A. C. Drewry requesting the <br /> <br />rezoning from rrA_1 Residential" to "B-1 Business" of their property at the corner <br /> <br />of Church and Cleveland Streets, to which recoIlllIEndation Mr. Marvin L. Hill, attorney <br /> <br />for the petitioners, requested Council to take exception: <br /> <br />Your Planning Commission, at a recent meeting, cons idered a petition from :Mrs. <br />Freda Worthington and Mr. A. C. Drewry, referred to it by Council. This petition <br />requested the rezoning from A-2 Residential to B-1 Business of the property <br />owned by them, lying on the southeast corner of the Cleveland Avenue, Church <br />Street intersecti on. <br /> <br />The Commission advertised and held a public hearing on this matter. it was <br />noted at the public hearing that no property owners appeared in opposition <br />to the petition even though the majority of the pr operty owners on Church <br />Street in this block were in attendance. Two service station operators <br />appearEld objecting only to the use of the property as a service station site, <br />
