<br />90 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 11, 1955 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the CitJ~ of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on <br />Tuesday, October 11, 1955, at 7:30 P.M., with all members present, as follows: Mayor <br />and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; Vice-Mayor and Councilman C. P. Craig; and Councilmen <br />B. H. Hill, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held September 27, 1955, were approved as read. <br /> <br />After considering once again a petition presented some months ago by Honorable K. C. <br /> <br /> <br />Whittle and Lanier Farm, Inc., requesting the rezoning to "Business" of their Lots <br /> <br /> <br />1-8 of Section J in Forest Park (off Lanier Road), and after again considering also <br /> <br /> <br />recent Planning Commission recommendations, Council voted to deny the petitioners t <br /> <br /> <br />rezoning request at this time. In doing so, Council expressed its appreciation to the <br /> <br /> <br />Planning Commission for its very thorough study of this matter as well as its excellent <br /> <br /> <br />report on the subject. Council expressed, too, its appreciation to the Attorneys for <br /> <br />the interested parties for the fine manner in which they had presented their respective <br /> <br /> <br />arguments and cases. <br /> <br />Reporting on a request received by Council September 27th from Dudley Street residents <br /> <br /> <br />for improvements to said street--which request was referred to City Manager Mathewson-- <br /> <br /> <br />Mr. Mathewson indicated that the lack of required right-of-way will not permit the City <br /> <br /> <br />to give consideration to certain desirable major improvements to this street; however, <br /> <br /> <br />he did indicate that a narrow wooden bridge would be replaced by a temporary but more <br /> <br /> <br />serviceable structure within the next few weeks and that such maintenance as can be <br /> <br /> <br />provided streets of this type will be carried on. Mr. Mathewson further informed <br /> <br /> <br />Council that Lester Lumber Company, owner of some property on this street, has <br />
