90 TUESDAY OCTOBER 11, 1955 The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the CitJ~ of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, October 11, 1955, at 7:30 P.M., with all members present, as follows: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; Vice-Mayor and Councilman C. P. Craig; and Councilmen B. H. Hill, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. Minutes of the regular Council meeting held September 27, 1955, were approved as read. After considering once again a petition presented some months ago by Honorable K. C. Whittle and Lanier Farm, Inc., requesting the rezoning to "Business" of their Lots 1-8 of Section J in Forest Park (off Lanier Road), and after again considering also recent Planning Commission recommendations, Council voted to deny the petitioners t rezoning request at this time. In doing so, Council expressed its appreciation to the Planning Commission for its very thorough study of this matter as well as its excellent report on the subject. Council expressed, too, its appreciation to the Attorneys for the interested parties for the fine manner in which they had presented their respective arguments and cases. Reporting on a request received by Council September 27th from Dudley Street residents for improvements to said street--which request was referred to City Manager Mathewson-- Mr. Mathewson indicated that the lack of required right-of-way will not permit the City to give consideration to certain desirable major improvements to this street; however, he did indicate that a narrow wooden bridge would be replaced by a temporary but more serviceable structure within the next few weeks and that such maintenance as can be provided streets of this type will be carried on.
