<br />3~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 6, 1955 <br /> <br />A special meeting of' the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, held in lieu <br />of the meeting scheduled for September 13, 1955, was held in the Circuit Courtroom of <br />the Henry County Courthouse on Tuesday, September 6, 1955, at 7:30 P.M., Mayor R. S. <br /> <br />Hodnett presiding, and the following members being present: Mayor and Counci~1'Jl8.Il R. S. <br /> <br />Hodnett; Vice-Mayor and CounciLTJlan C. P. Craig; and Councilmen B. H. Hill, W. T. Turner, <br />and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />...- <br /> <br />Because of the anticipated length of this meeting, reading of the minutes of Council's <br /> <br />August 23rd meeting was deferred until its next regular meeting. <br /> <br />Ci ty School Superintendent M. L. Carper appeared before Council on beha1.f of the City <br /> <br />School Board and requested that Council make available in the very near future the <br /> <br />sum of $]3 ,000.00 to pay for the completion of architectural plans for a new Albert <br /> <br />5m'" <br />~ii <br />i <br /> <br />Ha..-.oris High School building. Council took no action on tIns request other than to <br /> <br />assure the School Board that Council's decision on this request will be forthcoming. <br /> <br />Mr. Carper als 0 cited other school building needs, as follows: <br /> <br />(a) An addition to the East Martinsville School; <br />(b) An addition to Clearview Elementary School; and <br /> <br />(c) A new school in the Forest Park Area. <br /> <br />.,.- <br /> <br />Mention was made by City Manager Mathewson concerning the favorable Report on Audit as <br /> <br />prepared by the firm of E. Jackson Sapp, CPA, covering the City's financial transactions <br /> <br />for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1955. <br /> <br />In connection with an invitation from the Martinsville Junior Chamber of Conunerce for <br /> <br />Mayor Hodnett and all members of Council to attend a Brunswick Stew at Liberty Heights <br /> <br />on September 10, 1955 in honor of area tobacco farmers, :Mayor Hodnett extended on beha1.f <br /> <br />of Council and the City a cordial welcome to farmers selling their tobacco on the local <br /> <br />market. <br />
