<br />2~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 11, 1954 <br /> <br />/- <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on <br />Tuesday, May 11, 1954, at 7:30 P.M., with the following members being present: Mayor <br /> <br />and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, and J. R. Walker,- <br /> <br />Councilman W. T. Turner being absent. <br /> <br />/- <br /> <br />Minutes of the special Council meeting held May 7, 1954, upon being read, were <br /> <br />approved. <br /> <br />Council revised its regular order of business to hear representatives from Martinsville <br /> <br />Touchdown Club, whose spokesman was Mr. JaIres C. Smith, who requested Council's <br /> <br />permission to purchase lights and allied equipment for Brovm Street Field, the <br /> <br />~~ <br />!l <br />V' <br /> <br />Touchdown Club to raise too necessary funds for the lights and equipment. The <br /> <br />Touchdown Club also requested that the City install the lights and provide maintenance <br /> <br />and electric current for same. The Touchdown Club presented to the Council petitions <br /> <br />which indicated that almost all of the citizerID and property owners in the area not <br /> <br />only approved the project but also indicated an understanding that Brown Street Fie id <br /> <br />would be used for baseball games in the evening, representatives of the Touchdown <br /> <br />~,'- <br /> <br />Club stating that from May 24th to August 24th the field would be used five nights a <br /> <br />week for softball and Pony League baseball. In granting the Touchdown Club permission <br /> <br />to purchase the lights and equipment for Brown Street Field, with the understanding <br /> <br />that title and oonership of these fixtures would remain with the Touchdown Club, <br /> <br />Council pointed out that it considered improvements and the use of Brown Street <br /> <br />Field only as a temporary measure towards locating and developing a permanent sight <br /> <br />for local amateur athletic activities. Council also requested City Manager Mathewson, <br /> <br />Recreation Director Russell, and a representative of the Touchdown Club to act as a <br /> <br />committee to develop rules and regulations covering the use of Brovm Street Field. <br />
