J22

SATURDAY

MAY 31. 1958

The City Council convened in the Oity Manager's Office on Saturday, at 11 tOO A.M.,
May 31, 1958. The meeting was in connection with the announced resignation by Mr.
W. F. Stone fran the position of City Attorney.

In the course of the meeting it developed that the Council wished to consider the

assembly as an official meeting for the purpose of taking official action with

respect to the resignation.

Accordingly, the meeting was convened by the Mayor with all members of Council present.
On motion duly made and seconded with the unanimous vote of the City Council, it was
moved that the City Manager act as Clerk for the purpose of recording the action of

the meeting.

,
On motion, seconded and adopted, a letter of May 31, 1958, fram William F. Stone,
submi tting his resignation, was read to the Council by the Mayor and was accepted.

It was directed that the letter be made a part of the minutes.

Hon. John W. Shultz, Mayor
City of Martinsville
Martinsville, Virginia

Dear Mayor Slmltz:

I hereby tender my resignation as City Attorney of Martinsville
effective at such time as may be convenient to the City Council.

In 1947 when I was first appointed City Attorney the position
required only about one-fourth of my time, but with the continued
growth and progress of our City its legal problems have multiplied
until the position of City Attorney requires most all of my time.
To retain the position of City Attorney means that I must neglect
my private law practice, which I cannot do and be fair to the other
members of my law firm.

I take this opportunity to thank the City Council and citizens
of Martinsville far allowing me to hold this position for almost
eleven years. I shall always treasure the friendship of the members
of the Council and all the City employees and department heads who
have made my job such a pleasant one. I cannot close this letter
