1 JULY 23, 1957 TUESDAY ",,-,. The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, July 23, 1957, at 7:30 P.M., all members beine present, as follows: Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. Stone; and Councilmen C. C. Donavant, B. H. Hill, and J. R. Walker. ~-, After the invocation, Council named Public Works Director George W. Brown as Acting Clerk of Council in the absence of W. H. Yeaman, Clerk of Council. Coumil deferred the reading of the minutes of its preceding meeting until the regular meeting to be held August 13, 1957. Ivlr. Jack Zachary, President, and other members of the Martinsville Retail Merchants Association appeared before Council and expressed their concern over the lack of more adequate downtown parking facilities, especially since the Chestnut street parking lot has been discontinued. Ci~ Manager Hirst indicated certain possibilities of improving the parking facilities and, along with Council, invited the assistance of the merchants and property owners as well as the efforts and. initiative of private enterprise in the development of additional off-street parking facilities. The ordinance placed on first reading July 9, 1957, adopting a revision and codi- fication of the City's ordinances--constituting a new city code--was adopted on second reading, by a recorded unanimous vote, including certain revisions as reconnnended by the publisher, which ordinance follows: - An ordinance adopting a revision and codification of the ordinances of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, providing for the repeal of ordinances not contained therein, with certain exceptions, and for other purposes herein- after set forth.
