<br />168 <br /> <br />TUES DAY <br /> <br />JrmE 25, 1957 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City o:f Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />wi th Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on <br /> <br />Tuesday, June 25, 1957, at 7::30 P.M., the following members being present: Mayor and <br /> <br />Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. Stone; and Councilmen <br /> <br />B. H. Hill and J. R. Walker. Councilman Clarence C. Donavant was absent. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeting held <br />June 11, 1957. <br /> <br />Among visitors present were students from a government class of Martinsville High <br />School, whose presence was acknowledged. <br /> <br />Pursuant to a duly-advertised notice, Council conducted a public hearing on a proposal <br /> <br /> <br />to increase the local tax rate on real estate and public service corporations :from <br /> <br />two dollars ($2.00) per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation to two dollars and <br /> <br /> <br />twenty-five cents ($2.25), effective with the 1957 tax levy. No persons present <br /> <br /> <br />registered any objections. Council, therefore, by recorded unanimous vote, amended <br /> <br /> <br />its real property tax ordinance by making effective the $2.25 rate. <br /> <br />Also pursuant to duly-advertised notice, Council conducted a public hearing on the <br /> <br />City Manager's reconunended 1957-58 city budget, as presented to Council May 20, 1957. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst presented certain revisions to reflect the June 11th repeal of <br /> <br />the City's admission tax ordinance, the June lith ordinance imposing a tax on City <br /> <br />utility customers, and the foregoing change in the property tax ordinance, as <br /> <br />follows : <br /> <br />---,._"....~.._-,_..,.~--,_.,._..,-,-- <br />
