<br />14 <br /> <br />FRIDAY <br /> <br />:MAY 3 ~ 1957 <br /> <br />....- <br /> <br />Pursuant to Section 5 of Chapter 2 of the Charter of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, a special and called meeting of the Council was held in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, Cj~y Hall, on Friday, May 3, 1957, at 5:00 P.M., for the purposes of <br /> <br />(1) electing or filling the vacancy on the Council resulting from the death on <br /> <br />April 28, 1957 of Mayor-Councilman F. V. Woodson; (2) electing a Mayor for the <br /> <br />city; electing a Vice-Mayor if need be; and transacting such other business as <br /> <br />,~ <br /> <br />might properly be brought before the Council. Present were Vice-Mayor and <br /> <br />Councilman John W. Shultz, Councilman B. H. Hill, and Councilman E. E. Stone. <br /> <br />CounciL'Tian J. R. Walker was absent because of illness, having been hospitalized <br /> <br />on April 29th. <br /> <br />As an expression of its loss and sorrow in the passing of Mayor Woodson, Council <br /> <br />~ <br />z~ <br />,,::.,-0> <br />~~ <br /> <br />"" <br /> <br />adopted the following resolution: <br /> <br />With profound sorrow and a deep sense of personal loss the Council of the <br />City of Martinsville records the untimely dea~1 on April 28, 1957 of Fred <br />Venable Woodson, member of the Council and Mayor of the City of Martinsville. <br /> <br />/- <br /> <br />Mr. Woodson1s many years of public service to the people of Martinsville <br />incluce his membership on City Council from January 1, 1933 to January 31, <br />1936, from September 1, 194)1 to August 31, 1948, and as Mayor and Council- <br />man from September 1, 1956. At all times his sincerity and his wise counsel <br />reflected his high conception of the mission of government. In addition, <br />his warm heart and enduring qualities won for him the respect and affection <br />of all who knew him. <br /> <br />Be it therefore resolved by the Council of the City of I\Iartinsville, Virginia, <br />in special and called meeting this t.hird day of I.1ay, 1957, that this <br />expression of cormnuni ty-loss, mingled with deep synpc,thy for the members of <br />Fred Venable 1,'!foodson1s family, be spread upon the rrinutes of this meetiqs <br />and t.~at a copy De fOrivarded to his widow' and son. <br /> <br />Upon nomination by Councilrnarl Stone, and there bei:r.g no other nominations submitted, <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />YIT. Clarence C. Donovant, 1112 Chatham Heights, was unanimously appointed to member- <br /> <br />ship on the Council to fill the unexpired tern (ending Al1,'-':USt 3+, 1960) of <br /> <br />Councilman Woodson. 1~. Donovant, being present, immediately subscribed to his <br />
