<br />130 <br /> <br />TUES DAY <br /> <br />MARCH 26, 1957 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />wi th Mayor F. V. Woodson presiding, was held in the Coun: il Chanber, City Hall, <br /> <br />on Tuesday, March 26, 1957, at 7 :30 P.M., the following members being present: <br /> <br />Mayor and Coun:ilman F. V. Woodson; Vice-Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; and <br /> <br />Coun::ilmen B. H. Hill and E. E. Stone. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its :March 12th and <br /> <br />March 18th (1957) meetings. <br /> <br />In recognizing the presence of IlBny visitors, Courcil extended a special welcome <br /> <br />to the Martinsville High School goverrunent class students and their teacher, Mrs. <br /> <br />Emily Norton, who were present as observers. <br /> <br />By letter dated March 15, 1957 Mr. C. T. Willians, Jr., President of Southwestern <br /> <br />Virginia Gas Company, submitted the follcwing proposal in connection with that <br /> <br />firm's renewed request that Council extend the gas franchise due to expire July <br /> <br />30, 1959: <br /> <br />We propose that two representatives of the Council am two representatives <br />of the Company meet to explore the possibility of finding a solution to the <br />problem of Southwestern Vir ginia Gas Company so that its credit can be <br />restored, its service can be extended to the greatest number of people, <br />and its gas rates reduced. <br /> <br />Representing the gas company were Mr. W. R. Broaddus, III, attOl:'ney, and Mr. <br /> <br />Warren J. Watrous, local manager, who elabOl:'ated on the proposal. After sore <br /> <br />discussion, Council agreed to meet (as a group or boqy-) with :Mr. Willians here <br /> <br />in Martirnville at some mutually-convenient time if Mr. Williams and/or his <br /> <br />company have some infonnation or facts to present which have not previously <br /> <br />been presented to the Council on this subject. <br />
