130 TUES DAY MARCH 26, 1957 The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, wi th Mayor F. V. Woodson presiding, was held in the Coun: il Chanber, City Hall, on Tuesday, March 26, 1957, at 7 :30 P.M., the following members being present: Mayor and Coun:ilman F. V. Woodson; Vice-Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; and Coun::ilmen B. H. Hill and E. E. Stone. After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its :March 12th and March 18th (1957) meetings. In recognizing the presence of IlBny visitors, Courcil extended a special welcome to the Martinsville High School goverrunent class students and their teacher, Mrs. Emily Norton, who were present as observers. By letter dated March 15, 1957 Mr. C. T. Willians, Jr., President of Southwestern Virginia Gas Company, submitted the follcwing proposal in connection with that firm's renewed request that Council extend the gas franchise due to expire July 30, 1959: We propose that two representatives of the Council am two representatives of the Company meet to explore the possibility of finding a solution to the problem of Southwestern Vir ginia Gas Company so that its credit can be restored, its service can be extended to the greatest number of people, and its gas rates reduced. Representing the gas company were Mr. W. R. Broaddus, III, attOl:'ney, and Mr. Warren J. Watrous, local manager, who elabOl:'ated on the proposal. After sore discussion, Council agreed to meet (as a group or boqy-) with :Mr. Willians here in Martirnville at some mutually-convenient time if Mr. Williams and/or his company have some infonnation or facts to present which have not previously been presented to the Council on this subject.
