<br />124 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />~RCH 12, 1957 <br /> <br />The regular semi~onth1y meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvi1le, <br />Virginia, with Vice-Mayor John W. Shultz presiding in the absence of Mayor <br />F. V. Woodson (who was ill), was held in the Cowcil Chamber, City Hall, on <br />Tuesday, March 12, 1957, at 7:30 P.M., the following members being present: <br />John W. Shultz, B. H. Hill, E. E. Stone, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its meetings <br /> <br /> <br />held February 26, March 4, and March ll, 1957. <br /> <br />On behalf of the National Fire Protective Association, Fire Chief Clay A. <br />Easterly presented to the Council and the City of Martinsville a certificate <br />and an award for V~rtinsvi11e's outstanding 1956 fire prevention program, <br />Martinsvi11e being awarded eighteenth place among all competing cities in <br />the United States, second place among all Class VI cities in the United States, <br />and first place among all Virginia cities. In accepting the certificate on <br />behalf of the Council and the citizens of M8.rtinsvil1e, Vice-Mayor Shultz <br />commended both the volunteer and paid firemen for their work and congratulated <br />them for the achievement. <br /> <br />The City Manager called to the attention of the Council that the three viewers <br /> <br />who had been appointed in pursuance of Section 15-766 of the Code of Virginia <br /> <br />as amended, had appraised the location and considered fully the proposed <br /> <br />abandonment and discontinuance of that portion of Third Street, immediately <br /> <br />North of and intersecting with Church street, between Church Street and Watt <br /> <br />Street, as shown on plat contained herewith and made a part of this ordinance. <br /> <br />The said viewers in pursuance of their direction and appointment by Council <br /> <br /> <br />under date of February 20th, 1957, have stated that they are of the opinion <br /> <br /> <br />the.t the closing of this particular section of Third Strept would not result <br /> <br /> <br />in any inconvenience to the public. <br />
