<br />L14 <br /> <br />MONDAY <br /> <br />FEBRrARY 18. 1957 <br /> <br />A meeting of Martinsville City Council, contin\led from its adjourned session <br />held February 15, 1957, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Monday, <br />February 18, 1957, at 4:30 P.M., the following members being present: Vice- <br />Mayor John W. Shultz, presiding; and Councilmen B. H. Hill, E. E. Stone, and <br />J. R. Walker-Mayor F. V. Woodson absent because of illness. <br /> <br />In receiving the 1956 Annual Report of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company, <br />Council acknowledged with appreciation the fine services being rendered by <br />the company and, also, congratulated the company upon its completion of <br />another outstanding year in which it won eighteenth place among all cities in <br />the nation in its fire prevention program, second place among cities of its <br />class, and first place among all Virginia cities. <br /> <br />At the request of Lester Lumber Company, Inc., through its counsel (Attorney <br />R. R. Young, Jr.), Council set in motion the procedure by which Council might <br />consider the closing and abandoning of an unopened portion of Third street <br />between East Church street and 'l-tatt Street by appointing a Board of Viewers, <br />composed of Messrs. I. M. Groves, Sr., I. W. Ramsey, and J. R. Troxler, to <br />view the property and determine if in its opinion any inconvenience will <br />result from the proposed closing and to present its findings thereon to the <br />Council. <br /> <br />Through City Attorney stone, Council was advised of the recent opinion and <br />verdict rendered in favor of the City in the case of Hooker Furniture, Inc. <br />vs. City of Martinsville, wherein the plaintiff claimed the City illegally <br />reassessed plantiff's property during the 1950 quadrennial reassessment. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst review with Council the status of the following streets <br />and related matters: <br />
